As winter approaches it is always a good idea to have a look at you home security, as it’s a fact that burglary incidents increase by 20% in the darker nights and more so as Christmas gets closer.

1, Always keep external doors locked, this may sound obvious but 23% of burglaries gained access through an open door, this could also make your insurance void. I recently had to do a full lock change in Doncaster because a sneak thief came into a house and stole the car keys with the house keys on, along with the car!
2, Check your locks are up to current British Standard and have a kitemark, especially uPVC & Composite doors. These must have no less than 3 diamonds marked on them to ensure they are snap safe and cannot be accessed by Lock Snapping.
3, Ensure all windows have working locking handles and are closed and locked when going to bed or out for any reason. Most burglaries are opportunities that they are watching for.
4, Don’t leave car keys and valuables on show near your front door as another way things are stolen is by a system called fishing when they put a stick or wire through your letterbox to reach your keys or to access keys left in the door to gain entry.
5, If you have an alarm make sure it’s working and have it serviced annually. Consider having CCTV installed, this is a great deterrent as it’s proven that you are 5 X less likely to be broken into if you have CCTV.
